Extra Credit Assignment

The first thing that came into my mind after reading the instruction of the extra credit assignment was “Professor, are you kidding me?” I wouldn’t be able to do this; the cashiers will laugh at me and give me this weird look. I always eat at Mc. Donald’s, it is because it is fast and it taste alright. It fits my schedule when I have busy week full of exams. However, as I read about the extra credit assignment, I never heard of such a weird order(no offense), and I’m very shy I wouldn’t dare to go up to Mc. Donald’s to order it, hence, I though of giving up the extra credit. I was hesitated and frustrated thinking to do the extra credit or just give it up. Until today which I though was the last due day, I told my friend about it. She gave me suggestion, courage and made up an a proper reason for order a bizarre meal, after listening to her I kind of have the guts to go up there and order it.

As I went into Mc Donald’s, I though I know why we were doing this, did he hate us? Or is it because Professor Kurpis wanted to prank us? I was scared to walk up to the waiting line, and I was still hesitating. However, I told myself I need the extra credit, so I got to force myself in there. I went there at 12.30pm, and there were a lot of people having lunch, they were white collar and blue collar, who goes to work around here. I though this was perfect, I totally came at the wrong time! Workers in Mc Donald’s were busy, there were two managers and four cashiers, I was so scared to go up to the counter, and I was preparing for the worst from them. I was choosing which cashiers look more polite, simultaneously; I though of leaving and coming back at a better time, and you I was having a lot of mental contradiction. However, one of the cashiers spotted me and asked me what I wanted. My heart was beating fast, and I walked toward him involuntarily. I started to make up excuses, which was created by my friend. I told him I was ordering this for my grandma, who had diabetes, so please listen carefully; the order were going to be a little bit different then usual. I told him I need a small fries with no salt, so he started to type it in, and the typing took a little bit long then usual. However, he didn't have the weird or annoying look on his face, on the other hand, it looked very normal to him, I was very surprised. After he finished typing, I told him I want a small burger with only four pickles, and I stressed on the only four pickles for three times. At the meantime, I was thinking why I am doing this to embarrass myself. Surprisingly, he didn’t look surprise or anything at all! He just gave me the receipt and served the next person in line. I was afraid they had the wrong order. However, I heard him talking with one of the manager, and he stressed on the four pickles two times, I guess they had the right order then. He then pointed at the monitor where I suppose all the orders are listed on there, and said no salt. There were only one cashier and one manager serving me, both of them didn’t look surprise or anything, and they were working efficiently. I paid attention to the place where they salted the fries, and I saw there were no fries, but they were already cooking new fries. Therefore, my order was fast. It only took eight to nine minutes for the whole process, they only communicate a few seconds, and none of them gave me any unpleasant look. I was very surprised and happy by my bizarre order, which it didn’t look bizarre at all to them because they didn’t gave me any weird or bizarre looks. Not even other cashier around looked surprise. I guess they always receive this kind of order. Moreover, as I was waiting in line for my food, the person who was before me had a burger with no pickles and no onion, and none of the cashier gave him any bad look.

When I received my order, I quickly checked my fries, they tasted really bad with no salt, and I was very happy about it! I checked my burger; they really do have four pickles! It was unbelievable! I was very happy, impressed and satisfy with their work! The cashier did communicate well with his manager for the pickles, and they work efficiently as I received my order around eight minutes! They didn’t give me any unpleasant look, which I don’t feel like a weirdo, and I was very satisfy with the staff’s manufacturing (order preparation), communications, coordination, flexibility and customer service processes. I would rate them 10 out of 10, but if I were to be very picky, I would rate 9 out of 10 because they didn’t show smiles. Still, how could they be smiling at you when it was a Wednesday busy lunch time?
If I were brought in as a consultant to McDonald’s to help them improve their efficiency, I couldn’t suggest anymore for them because they were doing a really excellent job, very efficient, flexible, and gave the customers confident to create their order. However, to be pickier, I’d say they need a pot to separate the fries. First, they’ll have to put it in a clean pot with no salt, and when they have to salt it, they’ll put the fries on the other side to of the pot to salt it. That way, they’ll be more efficient when people need fries with no salt. But when customers were as satisfy as I do, what more can you ask from a fast food restaurant?

Yes, I was thinking the samething when he gave the extra-credit..."are you kidding me?"-- But I didn't do it, and I find it very interesting that you had a good experience and not one gave you an unpleasant look or made you feel like a weirdo! And you got exactly what you ordered, besides this, the service was very efficient. Maybe I will try next time when I go to a McDonald's and make the same order, just for fun.
